Thyroid Balance

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland that sits on the lower front part of your neck, just above your collarbone. The thyroid creates hormones that impact your day-to-day functioning including metabolism, body temperature, heart rate, and more. The two hormones created in the thyroid are thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones, when functioning optimally, keep your body in balance. An imbalance of T4 or T3 can cause various diverse symptoms depending on if they are underactive, which is called hypothyroid, or overactive, which is called hyperthyroid.

Hypothyroid

Your thyroid gland is stimulated to make T4 and T3 by thyroid stimulating hormone, or TSH. When you have an underactive thyroid, your body creates more than a normal amount of TSH in response to activate T3 and T4 production. Medical providers test TSH with a blood test. If the blood test shows a higher than normal level, that indicates your thyroid is likely underactive. Common symptoms of an underactive thyroid are weight gain, difficulties regulating body temperature, brain fog, and fatigue. If your blood test shows an underactive thyroid, you should speak to your medical provider about treatment options. There are daily medicines you can take to replace the low T4 and/or T3.

Thyroid Balance

Your thyroid hormone levels fluctuate naturally based on your other hormones, stress levels, nutritional intake, and other factors. Your thyroid condition could be related to an autoimmune disorder as well. Your doctor can test your blood for antibodies that would help to diagnose hypothyroid autoimmune disorder (such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis) or a hyperthyroid autoimmune disorder (such as Graves Disease). Autoimmune thyroid disorders can be more difficult to treat and may correlate with increased risk of other autoimmune disorders such as Lupus or autoimmune arthritis. If you are experiencing the symptoms of an overactive or underactive thyroid, we recommend you consult with your medical provider to determine the cause and discuss potential treatment options. It is possible to bring your thyroid into balance, decrease or eliminate symptoms. As a compounding pharmacy, we can help create a unique formula to help you balance your thyroid levels.
